Curso “Spectral Synthesis of Stellar Populations in Galaxies”

Spectral Synthesis of Stellar Populations in Galaxies

14-18 October 2024 – FCAG

Galaxy spectra and/or multi-band photometry are the major source of knowledge about galaxy evolution through cosmic times. The translation of observed fluxes to physical properties like stellar masses, mean stellar, metallicities, and the star formation history involves several astrophysical ingredients and mathematical/methodological issues. Basic knowledge of these topics is necessary for a minimal understanding of a large part of the current (and past) literature on extragalactic astronomy. These series of lectures cover these topics. The aim is not to present the latest, more sophisticated spectral synthesis tools in the field, but, instead, to ensure the students have a basic understanding of the ingredients, assumptions, and limitations of such tools. The course will consist of four lectures of 2 hours, plus four ~ 1 hour lectures for practical (jupyter notebook-based) work.
